This leaves two options.. Mk2 switchgear/shrouds/steering lock or do what i did and have the lug machined off the shaft then re-welded on the shaft at the new location approx a inch away. - There is infact a marking on the mk2 shaft where the lug is to be welded for mk1 use. This indicates the shaft is the same on both just with different ends. Another point worth noting is to remove the shaft disengage it from the safety joint. To do this lube the bushes with WD40 and push the shaft down, then turn 90o to disengage the shaft. On a mk1 the shaft casting means you can't do this, you can either remove the whole coloum by disengaging it from the rack-deffo not reccomended, [trust me, i've replaced the rack before and it's not fun] or you can cut the old one off, it doesn't matter as you don't need it and have the modified mk2 version to fit. You can see the cut made in this picture;
The indicator cancelling device will also need modification to work. Just cut it in half approx.
Electrics..
I've fitted a Mk1 XR2 rev counter and a trip-counter, also fitted is central locking, electric windows, boot release, audiable headlight warning system, interior light delay & many other items!
